Parasailing began as military equipment. Pierre-Marcel Lemoigne, a French engineer, patented the slotted canopy in 1961 so that paratroopers could be lifted on a towline rather than dropped from an aircraft. Commercial operators borrowed the design within a decade.
Malta took it up late and selectively: the archipelago holds roughly 197 kilometres of coastline, but much of that is cliff, and the sport needs flat water and a long straight run. Parasailing Malta Golden Bay is the name that settled on the compromise, and it spans two very different stretches of shore.
Golden Bay — Ir-Ramla tal-Mixquqa in Maltese — lies on the northwest coast below Manikata, a broad crescent of red-gold sand walled in by clay slopes. It faces open sea toward Gozo and takes the full weight of the majjistral, the northwesterly wind. St George's Bay, some 18 kilometres southeast in St. Julian's, does the opposite. It is small, sheltered, hemmed by hotel terraces and the limestone shelf below Paceville, and its surface stays flat when the north coast turns white. That shelter explains the modern geography of the sport. Listings sold today as Parasailing Malta Golden Bay tickets depart from the Corinthia Beach Resort at St George's Bay, St. Julian's, while the Golden Bay name survives as shorthand carried over from the beach guides of the 1990s. Mellieħa Bay, a short drive north of Golden Bay, keeps a second launch point in service. The view from a few hundred metres up is the argument for all of it: the Sliema skyline to the south, the Comino channel to the north, and pale globigerina limestone reading almost white against the water — a run of Maltese coastal landmarks compressed into one horizon.
Height is set by towline length, not by ambition. Operators fly tandem and triple harnesses under a single canopy, a configuration that keeps the ascent slow and the landing dry-footed on the boat deck. Cameras rigged to the line are now standard, which is why so many Parasailing Malta Golden Bay tours advertise photographs and video as part of the flight rather than an extra. Little about the mechanics has changed since Lemoigne drew his slots. What has changed is the passenger: the same canopy that once trained soldiers now carries visitors over one of the most worked coastlines in the Mediterranean.
