Parasailing Malta St George's Bay has a stranger lineage than the sport suggests. In 1961 the French engineer Pierre-Marcel Lemoigne cut vents into a round parachute so that it would climb under tow, a device built to train paratroopers rather than entertain holidaymakers.
The idea reached the water roughly a decade later, when designers in the United States moved the launch platform onto a boat and added a hydraulic winch.
