The modern parasail was not invented for holidays. In 1961 the French engineer Pierre-Marcel Lemoigne cut slots into a round parachute canopy so that it climbed under tow rather than dropped, a device built to train paratroopers over open ground.
Within a decade the principle had moved offshore, the towing vehicle replaced by a boat and a powered winch. Parasailing Malta Blue Lagoon flights descend directly from that lineage: a harness, a tow line, and a canopy engineered to lift. Nothing about the mechanism has changed much. What changed was the water underneath it.
Malta supplied the water. The archipelago holds roughly 196 kilometres of coastline, cut from Globigerina and Coralline limestone, and where that rock shelves into pale sand the sea reads as a single turquoise pane. The Blue Lagoon is the narrow channel between Comino — 3.5 square kilometres, a handful of permanent residents — and the islet of Cominotto. Above it stands Santa Marija Tower, raised in 1618 under Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt to watch the Gozo Channel for corsairs. At sea level the lagoon registers as a colour. From altitude it registers as a shape.
St. Julian's became the launch point by accident of geography. Once a fishing settlement gathered around Spinola Bay, where the 1688 Spinola Palace still fronts the quay, it now runs through Balluta Bay and Paceville to the sand of St. George's Bay. The inlets are sheltered, deep enough for tow boats, and close to the northern run past St. Paul's Bay and Mellieħa Bay. What the vantage offers is legibility. Malta is a small, dense place — 316 square kilometres, layered with Neolithic temples, Knights' watchtowers and postwar apartment blocks — and from a boat's deck the island is only ever a wall of stone. Lifted on a tow line, the geology explains itself: the fault lines, the reefs, the sandbanks that make the lagoon glow.
